12 Dec GIA Winter Student Showcase: Monsters & Mistletoe
On December 4th, the talented students from GIA’s After School program put on two performances of their Winter Showcase, titled “Monsters & Mistletoe,” at Greenway Court Theatre! The production was written by the student stars and directed by teaching artists Jonny and Zuri, incorporating song, dance, interactive improv, and immersive storytelling.
The show’s narrative followed two friends at home, watching holiday TV specials with very different preferences: one friend loves spooky Halloween programming, while the other prefers cozy Christmas movies and musicals. The audience gets to enjoy glimpses of each program they flip through, as well as the commercials. Their struggle to find common ground took a turn for the supernatural when the two besties end up INSIDE the television and have to find a way out.
The TV vignettes included a zombie performance of Radiohead’s “Creep,” a parody of a beloved scene from 2003’s Elf, and a choreographed dance number set to Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” featuring the Greenway Fairfax Dance Company.
As an encore, two of the show’s student stars performed a carol featured in the production, “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” at the Greenway Main Stage at Melrose Trading Post for Merry Melrose.
We are so proud of our incredible GIA students and can’t wait to support their participation in the annual Fairfax High musical next semester.
