Greenway welcomed the new year with a new initiative called GreenwayREADS. GreenwayREADS is an ongoing collaboration between Greenway Arts Alliance’s three departments—Greenway Institute for the Arts, Greenway Court Theatre and the Melrose Trading Post—and Fairfax High School. The program involves “a community reading of a pre-selected novel. High school students engage with the text in the classroom during a 6-week residency with a teaching artist who develops arts-based activities and workshops highlighting the novel’s themes. Then, our Greenway Court Theatre produces a stage version of the novel and hosts matinee performances for the students, including a post-show discussion with the cast. Students and teachers also have the chance to engage in the program through social media, contests, and a raffle.” For its first year, Fairfax read George Orwell’s 1984 to launch the initiative.
The success of this brand new endeavor didn’t distract Greenway from their regularly scheduled giving. In 2016, $127,649 went to after-school drama, dance classes and in-school arts integration, film, Shakespeare, literature and dance classes. $500 bought new sets for the school play.
Music classes received $3,190 in equipment and celebrated with a $250 class performance at the Melrose Trading Post. They entered a tournament that cost $2,000 in fees. Meanwhile, the Band Club used $2,000 for instrument repairs and music. The Animal Awareness Club needed $1,000 for posters and to attend a conference.
The Black Student Union received $800. $2,212 paid for an ASB Leadership Conference. Another leadership conference cost $2,412. $500 paid for a celebratory Spirit Day, planned by the Leadership Club.
The Journalism Club continued bringing the school important news. They needed $4,200 for printing newspapers, $4,410 for supplies, $850 for a camera, and $645 to advertise the Melrose Trading Post in their issues.
And now, sports! This year, everybody needed equipment: girls’ volleyball, $2,300; cheer team, $800; Students Run LA, $1,125; PS, $1,000; Boys’ soccer, $76,499. The athletic department got new soccer nets for $2,000. The soccer team needed $500 for tournament fees.
$2,212 supported staffing for Fairfax High School. The Parent Center used $1,822.21 for Teacher Appreciation efforts. $5,104.02 put on a holiday party for Fairfax staff.
For further donating purposes, $482,237.14 was deposited into the school’s account.
The Math Club used $615 to attend a math tournament and $850.20 for team fees, lunches, web membership, and recruiting.
The MGW Entrepreneurship Club needed $997.10 to pay the entry fees in a tournament. $840 covered half of their airline fees to a conference in Washington D.C.
L.A.C.E.R. used $924 to purchase mirrors and $960 for an escape room field trip.
Last order of business: Congratulations, class of 2016! Greenway celebrated with $4,000 in scholarships given to the Fairfax senior class, $3,500 in scholarships to the Black Student Union, and $240 in senior awards.
