2011 – $185,204.36

What did Greenway do with 185,204 dollars? I’ve got some splainin’ to do. And don’t worry, I’ll even account for the 36 cents.

In 2011, Greenway paid homage to one of the greats—Lucille Ball. The audience adored the Rick Sparks-directed I Love Lucy, Live on Stage, when the sold-out show premiered at Greenway Court Theatre. The LA Times raved about Aaron Henderson’s scenic designs and Shon LeBlanc’s costumes.

Fairfax students got in on the dramatics as well. $133,726 went to their after-school (drama, dance, and film) and in-school classes (film, Shakespeare, poetry, and dance).

The drama department needed $1,200 for equipment and subsequently put on a fantastic play version of The Outsiders.

The physical education department wanted to keep the students strong. $2,010.36 of free weights for the weight room ensured that those muscles would be properly exercised. For anyone keeping track down to the penny—you have found those pesky 36 cents.

The students used those muscles on the courts and on the field. The girl’s basketball team thrived with a renovated locker room. The cheerleading team put on cheer camp with $1,500. The boy’s basketball team used $1,000 for warm-ups. The baseball team needed $5,000 for baseball field use, supplies, and batting cages.

It wouldn’t matter if the students were strong if the school wasn’t doing its best to keep them healthy, so the Nurse’s Office got support in the form of a $1,046 printer.

For those students who were more musically minded, guitar class was an option. It became an even better option when Greenway gifted the class $1,000 in supplies.

Or perhaps writing is more your style of self-expression. In that case, you’ll be happy to learn about the Beatnix, “a Fairfax High School club that is mentored by Greenway Teaching Artists, explores poetry and uses the art form as a means for the students to fully express themselves.” This club got to go on a writer’s retreat in Lake Arrowhead with a $2,400 donation.
