2003

2003 – $173,421 –

Happy fifth birthday to the Melrose Trading Post!

MTP celebrated five successful years and an expansion resulting in 160 vendors and employing eighteen Fairfax students who lead hundreds of weekly volunteers.

The Fairfax students also had much to celebrate, as the senior class got scholarships from GAA totalling $30,000. The class of 2003 also used $2,500 in rentals to celebrate their graduation. Sounds like a good party!

The arts are supported as they received $112,063 for after-school drama and film classes, with a portion of that sum going to in-school writing and literacy classes. This year brings another artistic accomplishment to add to Greenway’s supply; fostered at Greenway Court Theatre, Russell Simmons’ original production, Def Poetry Jam, opened on Broadway.

The newly-opened Parent Center continued operations with $18,720 dedicated to staffing.

In equipment, the softball team used $2,000 and the cheerleading team $1,560.

The students had another successful outing to Washington DC, with Greenway funding the trip with $5,500 in donations.

I’m exhausted just hearing about all this hard work. Aren’t you? However, it still wasn’t yet time for Greenway to rest for the year. First, they had to make sure Fairfax High’s campus was beautified with $1,078.

There. Great work this year, Greenway. You made a lot of improvements. Now you can get some well-deserved beauty sleep until 2004.
