Welcome to the new millennium! 🪩
Greenway Arts Alliance had a pretty great year—which means that Fairfax High School had a great year, too.
The completed Greenway Court Theatre opened with a fantastic production: “Caught in the rupture between past and future, an ensemble of characters search desperately for rebirth: in dreams, in hashtags, in childhood diaries, in sidewalks that lead to nowhere. Greenway Court Theater began its existence in the year 2000 with the world premiere of Sonnets for an Old Century by José Rivera, a series of monologues set in the afterlife which, on the verge of the new millennium, asked us to look backwards and make our case about the lives we had led.”
The drama program had a lot to be thankful for. They received $129,458 to fund after-school drama, film classes, and film equipment. This contribution was part of GAA’s very first arts education program, the Arts Recovery Project. The effort focused on restoring Fairfax drama programs that had suffered unfortunate budget cuts.
The Greenway Court Theatre kept up the momentum with beginning Tuesday night open mics (that still happen today!) put on by Da Poetry Lounge, a poetry venue in Los Angeles.
The athletic contributions continued with $4,021 in equipment for the football team, $733 for baseball, and $2,015 for softball. Dance costumes were purchased for $1,520. The tennis court got a fancy upgrade for $850.
The arts magnet gained $686 in supplies. The Washington DC trip totalled $3,800 this year.
Lastly, the class of 2000 got to strut across the stage draped in $430 of well-deserved graduation cords. The event was snazzily decorated with $4,056 in rentals, matching the way the graduates looked their very best.
