1998 – $199,188 –

Greenway Arts Alliance (GAA)’s outreach seriously got going in 1998, with its contributions for the year totaling $199,188.

That’s a pretty big number! Let’s see what went into it.

One of the biggest projects started when Whitney and Pierson stumbled upon an abandoned building named Greenway Court, originally constructed by Fairfax students in 1939. They expressed interest in transforming it into a theater.

The renovation of Greenway Court into Greenway Court Theatre was initiated, spearheaded by experienced theater and set designer, James Eric.

This project was valued at $109,983, the bulk of GGA’s donations that year.

But of course, GAA didn’t stop there!

Greenway Arts Alliance also made many contributions to Fairfax’s extracurricular programs.

For example, GAA paid $1,582 in fees to put on the Science Bowl and $700 to sponsor the Academic Decathlon.

The yearbook club received $1,200 of equipment.

A contribution of $3,758 funded a trip to Washington DC. $950 paid for the buses for another field trip.

GAA supported the athletic department of Fairfax High by purchasing $5,672 worth of equipment and uniforms for the cheerleading team. The basketball team received $20,000 in equipment and uniforms. $1,295 and $3,370 in equipment went to the softball team and football team respectively.

In uniforms, the baseball team was given $1,350, the volleyball team $2,100, and the track team $600.

For the school’s campus, $10,562 bought permanent trash cans and benches and $1,100 got a display case for the hallway.

In order to encourage perfect attendance, medallions were purchased for $1,600 and awarded to only the most punctual students.

Lastly, GAA helped Fairfax put on a magical prom by contributing $1,854 in supplies and $30,412 to rent the event space.

What a fantastic first year of operation!
